May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities (like Missoula!) from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to giving biking a try.

Missoula in Motion makes bicycle helmets available at an affordable price! Find them at the first farmers market of the year.

MTB Missoula Trail Work Day – Flow Trail at Marshall Mountain Missoula’s mountain biking trail stewards host several work days throughout May. Connect with MTB Missoula for more information.

Tuesday, May 7th
Bike to Bake from 5 PM to 7 PM, starting at Free Cycles to Moonlight Kitchens
Meet at Free Cycles for a one and a half mile bike ride down the Bitterroot Trail to Moonlight Kitchens. Once there, kitchen staff will provide materials for baking cookies.

Wednesday, May 8th
Bike-to-School Day
The National Center for Safe Routes to School hosts National Bike to School Day the second week of May. Missoula County Public Schools has information about routes.

Thursday, May 9th
Bike Disco from 8 PM at Caras Park Pavilion
Portable speakers blast music as people bike from tunnel to tunnel around Missoula. Route is around five to eight miles at a slow pace with frequent dance breaks.

Saturday, May 11th
Bike for Shelter from 8 AM to 1 PM at Watson’s Children’s Shelter
This family-friendly event has something for everybody: a 10-mile neighborhood bike ride and a 2-mile fun-loop. After the ride, participants can enjoy a barbecue lunch, cotton candy, snow cones, numerous kid-friendly activities, and music to listen to on the lawn.

Tuesday, May 14th
Compost Give-Back with Soil Cycle from 4 to 6 PM at 736 S 1st St W.
Soil Cycle believes it is crucial to their education and sustainable efforts to give finished compost back to our members. As part of bike month, this Soil Give back will be done by bicycle if we have enough cycleteers! 

Please bring a bicycle, trailer (if you have one), water, helmet and a positive attitude. We will be delivering bagged compost to 40-70 homes in the Missoula area, so we need a lot of volunteers! Pre-ride, we need volunteers to bag soil so please contact us if you want to help Monday or Tuesday morning. Thank you for completing the cycle.

Wednesday, May 15th
Beginner MTB Missoula Ride from 6:30 to 9 PM, starting at Pattee Canyon Trailhead, ending at Dram Shop
This volunteer-run event is a great way to meet fellow riders and learn about some of Missoula's most beginner-friendly trails. The ride starts at the top of Pattee Canyon for laps on the Sam Braxton Trail at 6:30 PM. After an hour or so of riding in small groups, we'll head over to the Dram Shop, where every ride participant will get their first beer/drink for FREE (applies to drinks $5 and under)!

Thursday, May 16th
Missoula Mayhem from 6 to 9 PM at Caras Park Pavilion
This month, we'll take some chill neighborhood trails through the Lower Rattlesnake to the Tamarack St. trailhead on Jumbo for a few miles of singletrack (up Lincoln Road Singletrack and down Sound of Music) and back down into town. From start to finish, the route is about 14 miles and bikes geared for climbing with wider tires (mountain or gravel) are suggested.

Bike-to-Work Day Happy Hour from 5 to 8 PM at Hellgate Cyclery
On your bike home from work, stop by Hellgate Cyclery for happy hour! Snacks and beverages will be available; this event compliments the morning Bike-to-Work Day fueling stations.

Saturday, May 18th
Tour de Gardens with Garden City Harvest from 3 to 6:30 PM
Meet at Caras Park Pavilion and ride with us on a tour of five community garden locations: PEAS Farm, Providence Hospital Garden, Northside Garden, Lowell School Garden, and Garden City Harvest Headquarters. Each stop will feature a tour of the space from a volunteer gardener. The whole route is under 10 miles. No registration needed, just show up!

Missoula Lunar Cycle / Full Moon Ride from 10 PM at Silver Park
After the sun goes down, join this leisurely group ride and explore Missoula under a full moon! Bring front and rear lights for your bike.

Sunday, May 19th
Outdoor Bicycle Art Tour with Women Bike Missoula from 11 AM to 1 PM
Meet at the Art Park in front of Adventure Cycling. We'll follow a route much like the signal box art ride a few years ago, as nearly all have been repainted since then, and we'll also include other new art installations. This will be a loop ride of under 5 miles with lots of stops, so plan on two or three hours, and dress for unpredictable weather.

Green Drinks with Climate Smart Missoula, Climate Ride and other local climate change organizations from 5 to 8 PM at Goodworks Ventures
Riding a bicycle is one of the most sustainable transportation choices a person can make. Green Drinks is an opportunity to network with other people in Missoula that care about sustainable and renewable energy practices. Kettlehouse Brewing is providing refreshments.

Women’s Bicycle Maintenance Workshop with Free Cycles & Women Bike Missoula from 6-8 PM
This workshop helps women become more confident when working on their bicycle. Bring your bike, your questions, food and/or drink to share and enjoy the camaraderie of other women interested in being more independent with their bikes. Please feel free to stop by Free Cycles anytime between 6pm-8pm, if you can't make it at 6pm, it's no problem! Free admissions, yet donations are appreciated. All women and non-binary people are welcome!

One of our favorite events, join us for a Thursday night social ride packed with disco tunes and dance breaks along the way! Our route is between 5 and 8 miles mostly along the bike path and we cruise at a slow pace the whole time, sticking together. 

Tuesday, May 28th

Wednesday, May 29th
Mullet Cycling Classic
MTB Missoula starts the mountain bike racing season off with a two-rider relay: one person goes up, one person comes down. The race begins with a Le Mans start in the base area. Climbers run to their bikes and ascend the course via a prescribed climbing route. At the top of the course the Climber passes the timing baton to the Descender, who races to the finish as quickly as possible, via a selection of descending routes.

Thursday, May 30th
Ward 3 with City Council member, Heather Harp
Join Pedal Missoula & Heather Harp for a bike ride through Ward 3: the Hip Strip, Riverfront neighborhood, slant streets and the University of Montana. We’ll meet at Big Dipper on the Hip Strip at 6 PM, and ride as a group at a slow pace, stopping to discuss various landmarks.

Bike Travel Weekend
Adventure Cycling Association wants you to join thousands of people throughout the world and go on a one- or two-night bike adventure. Camp or stay at a hotel, hostel, or friend’s house. Go solo, with friends, or a big group, and ride as many miles as you’d like. Just make sure the adventure you choose is your speed and you have a smile on your face at the end of the weekend. Montana Dirt Girls
The Dirt Girls are a group of women in the Missoula, MT area that get together each Tuesday evening to mountain bike & hike. They formed in 2001 as a way to enjoy the outdoors with other women. Rides start at 6 PM; connect with the Dirt Girls for each week’s ride location.

Every Wednesday:
Coffee Outside from 7:15 to 8:15 AM at Clark Fork Natural Area
A year-round weekly gathering that continues during Bike Month. Beans provided by Black Coffee Roasting Company. Bring your own camp coffee kit to brew on the spot!
